The Eastern New England Council of HI-USA is accepting applications for the position of Hostel Manager at HI-Truro.
Job Descriptions
All Hostel Managers actively engage in achieving the mission of HI-USA, "to help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people, through hostelling." Each Manager is responsible for all facets of their hostels' day-to-day operations as well as general oversight of the hostel operations in accordance with the purpose and goals of HI- USA and the policies of the Eastern New England Council.
Oversee all aspects of hostel operation at 40-50 bed location, including daily operation. Provide high quality guest service, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcome atmosphere. Promote hostelling and environmentally sound practices. Train, supervise and evaluate all volunteer and paid staff, and contract labor. Manage all fiscal aspects of operations. Supervise the maintenance and upkeep of hostel building, equipment, grounds, furnishings, and fixtures. Ensure compliance with all HI standards. Represent the hostel to local officials, neighbors, media and the general public. Local marketing, such as distribution of brochures. Maintain, and seek out new, local discounts with local retailers, restaurants and recreational activities. Maintain ongoing communication with supervisor. Maintain educational programs. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
Must Have:- High School degree and/or equivalent work experience in a hostel, is required. College coursework in business management or hospitality management preferred.
- Facilities and/or personnel management experience.
- Ability to work effectively without immediate supervision.
- Customer service experience and enjoy working with the public.
- Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.
- Must be flexible regarding work schedule: must work evenings, early mornings, holidays and weekends.

Job Descriptions
Desk Staff
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, checking people in and out; using a cash register and handling cash and credit card transactions; setting up breakfast (no cooking); answering phones and replying to emails; processing reservations via phone, email, online reservation system, and in person; answering loads of questions about what to do, where and when; entering data in the computer using excel; sometimes helping with housekeeping and laundry; minor maintenance, like unplugging a toilet; welcoming groups; acting as social director....all while having fun!
Housekeeper
Daily housekeeping tasks may include, but are not limited to: laundering lots of sheets and towels, making beds, washing dishes, cleaning the kitchen including the refrigerators, sweeping and/or vacuuming, mopping all bathroom and kitchen floors, emptying garbage in rooms, bathrooms and kitchen, dusting, washing windows, cleaning the bathrooms including sinks, showers and toilets everyday, and keeping all common areas looking neat.
Qualifications

Live-In Hostel Assistant - HI-Point Montara Lighthouse
HI-Point Montara Lighthouse is a 50-bed hostel providing low-cost, short-term overnight accommodations for 9,600 educational and recreational travelers each year. Additionally, the lighthouse grounds have 10,000 day visitors each year. The hostel is based at a State Park historic site on the beautiful San Mateo coast, south of San Francisco and north of Half Moon Bay.

Responsibilities
- Welcome, register, orient, and supervise guests.
- Take individual and group reservations by telephone, email, and an online system.

Position Purpose

Hostelling International Chicago is seeking a full time Facilities Manager to supervise and assist the maintenance department of a 110,000 square feet, seven-story building in downtown Chicago. Position responsibilities includes but not limited to: Facilities Manager
- Understand and oversee the budgeting and expenses of the department, and the priorities that evolve due to budgeting; complete the year end annual budget process on time.
- Ensure that property is in compliance with all federal, state and local laws including OSHA, EEOC and HI-USA quality standards
- Ensure that all maintenance requests are professionally completed by maintenance staff on time and that all requests are correctly recorded and reported back to the General Manager.
- Inspect and follow-up with housekeeping supervisor to ensure that housekeeping staff are on task and completing assignments in a timely and acceptable manner.
- Ensure that all daily needs for the departments are anticipated and provided.
- Maintain an on-going list of projects and to plan a daily/weekly/monthly work cycle of those projects to insure completion in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records of monthly, quarterly and annual service maintenance inspection of all equipments.
- Develop monthly and quarterly rooms and public space inspections, and create a tracking system for all property and facilities.
- Reconcile all maintenance issues, from both a physical plant aspect and the management of staff.
- Provide leadership and management within the departments.
- Hire and train all departmental employees.
- Supervise and manage staff; when needed, discipline staff following all company policies and procedures.
- Review maintenance staff's worked hours for payroll compilation.
- Be present on property for management of crisis when emergency situations arise from natural causes (hurricanes, floods, etc.) or from anticipated or unanticipated events.
- Prepare and procure bids for the negotiation of contracting work as well as submit a related report to management as needed.
- Formulate and implement accurate preventative maintenance programs for all equipment including but not limited to the HVAC system, power generator and emergency systems.
- Work with vendors to create a reliable system for work requests that are unable to be provided by the department; insure that all working relationships are positive, but are geared toward the best interest of the property at all times.

Hostelling International New York is seeking a full time General Manager to manage the property by overseeing the creation & execution of employee management programs, safety programs, marketing plans, budgets, sales activities, cost containment, property maintenance, & security.
Hostelling International New York is a 672 bed; 90,000 square feet youth hostel located in Manhattan’s Upper West Side at 891 Amsterdam Avenue and is one of the world’s largest hostels. Education/Experience

The hostel general manager is a full-time, permanent employee who is responsible for all facets of the operation of the hostel, both day-to-day and long-range, in accordance with the purpose, goals, and policies of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Chamounix Mansion. As a condition of employment, the general manager resides in a two-story, five room cottage on the grounds of Chamounix Mansion. The general manager is supported by a staff of two full-time assistant managers and a part-time housekeeper. The responsibilities of general manager include marketing, maintaining high quality service to guests including a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, an efficient reservation system, consistent cleanliness of facilities, and security of buildings. The general manager also participates with the Board of Directors in the development of annual operating and capital budgets; as well as coordinating administrative matters of the Development Committee.
The successful candidate will be a creative problem solver with strong interpersonal and communication skills who works well independently and has experience in financial, personnel and facilities management. Office Manager (Part-time)
Potomac Area Council (PAC) is seeking an energetic individual to manage the administrative matters of this growing Council headquartered in Washington, DC. PAC owns and operates the HI-Baltimore and HI-Harpers Ferry hostels and is also a part-owner of the HI-Washington, DC hostel. This job is expected to be 20 hours per week. This individual will report to the Treasurer.
Responsibilities:
- Receive correspondence (electronic and postal) and highlight issues that need to be addressed to the appropriate officers
- Interface with payroll service provider in submitting hours and salaries and making sure that the checks are received by employees on time
- Provide administrative support to PAC hostel managers as needed for invoice payments, petty cash reimbursements and computer support
- Interface with HI-USA to submit the quarterly reports, membership sales, merchandise orders and reimbursement requests
- Record all financial transactions in Quickbooks® software. Generate financial reports as required. Generate checks as required for signatures by officers
- Receive monthly reports from hostels and generate tax payments to local governments as required
- Maintain the Council website and all records up to date
- May require occasional travel to the hostels and attendance at the Board meetings
Qualifications (Required):
- Previous administrative experience (two to five years minimum)
- Quickbooks® experience (one to two years minimum)
- Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, members, customers, board members and donors (oral and written)
- Ability to use various office software tools including electronic mail, internet searches, word processing, presentations and spreadsheets (Microsoft Office™)
- Ability to update websites using simple tools
Qualifications (Preferred):
- Information technology experience in supporting basic office networks
- Higher level Quickbooks® experience in account reconciliations and others

Hostelling International - USA White Mountains, Conway, New Hampshire
HI-Conway is a 31-bed hostel providing low-cost, short-term overnight accommodations for educational and recreational travelers each year. This New England farmhouse is located just steps away from the White Mountains National Forest 2 -1/2 hours from Boston and 1-1/2 hours from Portland Maine. Close to winter sports area as well as a river for kayaking and swimming.
Responsibilities
- Take individual and group reservations by telephone, e-mail and an online system
- Assist in the organizing and processing of group reservations
- Welcome, register, orient and supervise guests
- Maintain security and safety of the hostel and personal belongings of guests
- Represent and promote Hostelling International - USA and the hostel in a positive manner to guests, callers, local officials and the general public
- Provide information about HI-USA, the hostel and the local area to guests in person and over the telephone and e-mail
- Update daily availability on recorded voice system
- Collect overnight fees, handle sale of memberships while on duty and batching out on credit card machine and cash register
- Extensive housekeeping duties including the daily cleaning of the hostel
- Provide on-call assistance in emergencies any time while on the hostel premises
- Additional duties in one or more of the following areas: cleaning, building, maintenance, reservations, gardening
- Other duties as assigned by the Hostel Manager.
Qualifications
- Must have customer service experience and enjoy working with the public.
- Excellent oral, communication and organizational skills
- Experience handling cash and recording sales transactions
- Accurate, neat and thorough record keeping
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively without immediate supervision
- Adaptability and willingness to do a variety of tasks including housekeeping and maintenance
- Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis
- Hostelling experience and support of the mission and goals of HI-USA
- Must be flexible regarding work schedule; office shifts run 8:00am – Noon (some days off duty before noon ) and 5pm –10pm, 2 days a week some holidays and weekends total hours16 to 18 hours a week
- Computer skills - e-mails are the only task requiring computer
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred but not a requirement at start
